One summer’s day the architect Peter Külby took a walk in Milan, Italy. In a small street right off renowned Via Montenapoleone he suddenly came upon a green courtyard. Right in the heart of Milan the courtyard appeared to be an idyllic oasis – a place where the city seemed to catch its breath. A refuge in the middle of the metropolis. The courtyard prompted him with the vision of an apartment building, combining all the advantages of living in a major city with the calmness of a botanic refuge. This vision now becomes a reality.
Three residential buildings containing 51 apartments have a view of the spacious gardens designed by Enzo Enea, the adjoining hotel completes the picture. The sublime architecture, large windows, south-facing balconies and carefully selected natural materials transform THE YARD into a work of art, inundated with light. Generations have teamed up at Külby + Külby Architects to create THE YARD.
In collaboration with the architects’practice of Menassa Külby Architects, founded by his son, David, and partner, Cindy Menassa, Peter Külby and his team designed THE YARD down to the last detail. Thus, the ideas of two generations flowed into the concept. Out of the kaleidoscope of their diverse life experiences from Los Angeles, Berlin, Beirut and Lörrach on the Swiss border, visions of living have emerged which adroitly combine the old with the new.
The main idea of THE YARD is that apartments should adjust to the people living there, not the other way round. Just as long as you share our enthusiasm for high, bright and generously sized rooms – they are part of the architectural concept. In many of the apartments, you can even alter the ground plan to create your ideal living quarters. From the first to the fifth upper floors, you can arrange your apartment (ranging from 59 m² to 181 m² with 2 to 5 rooms (up to 4 bedrooms)) according to your own personal preferences. An ingenious sliding door concept allows you to transform rooms again and again to suit your everyday life.

We were able to acquire the world famous, multiple award-winning landscape architect Enzo Enea to design the property’s spectacular garden. Due to his countless renowned projects and multiple awards, there is a lot to say about Enzo Enea. Yet the best way to get close to Enea as a person is through his passion for trees, which is obvious and palpable throughout his design for THE YARD. For over 20 years, the landscape architect has been collecting trees and has even founded a museum for them in 2010. The tree museum is part of his 7.5 hectare park grounds at the headquarters of Enea GmbH in Rapperswil-Jona, near Zurich. The trees are embedded in a landscape that combines botany with architecture, art and design.
Inspired by the architect’s vision, Enea conceived the project’s botanical refuge. His concept for the spectacular garden of THE YARD features light-colored trees, reeds and broad lawns that invite you to linger. A large, communal lounge area completes the grounds. The design, typical of Enea, with its harmonious, organic formation, is also mirrored in the lush green rooftop terraces. Enzo Enea is also happy to advise the buyers of these penthouse apartments, so you can see your plant and design choices brought to life by a master.
Most apartments feature bathrooms against anouter wall with ceiling-high, open-air windows and separate guest WCs. All bathrooms are fitted with high-quality brand-name products: the bathroom concept of THE YARD includes only tiles, fittings and ceramics from renowned manufacturers such as Laufen, Steinberg or Hansgrohe.
